About the show
THE POTTERS GO TO WAR and the KILNGATE MEMORIAL TO THE ROYAL DOULTON FALLEN
The story of the men to the Royal Doulton pottery works who volunteered together and marched away to war in 1914, with archive film footage to give an impression of what they endured. 44 men were lost - a further 15 Royal Doulton men were lost in World War 2. The Royal Doulton Memorial to the fallen remained on the wall of the Doulton factory until the bronze panel listing all the fallen was stolen several years ago.
Now there is a new initiative, and the Kiln Gate Memorial to the Royal Doulton Fallen is being created and will be erected in Nile Street, Burslem, near to the original factory gates - it will be unveiled in 2026. We get an insight into the many aspects of the project and hear stories of some of the Doulton men - including that of Alfred Holdcroft, the ‘forgotten’ soldier who wasn’t given a Commonwealth War Graves headstone, and has lain in an unmarked grave in Burslem Cemetery since 1918 - until a wooden cross was erected in the grave in September 2025.
A special archive film show by Ray Johnson
