Scarborough Symphony Orchestra is delighted to perform an extraordinary evening of music on Saturday, 9th May at the Queen Street Methodist Hall, Scarborough. This concert promises a rich tapestry of Russian orchestral masterpieces, transporting listeners on an exhilarating musical journey.

Opening the programme is Alexander Glazunov’s La Mer, a Fantasy for Orchestra scored for a huge orchestra with a sumptuous, Wagnerian-inspired soundscape. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor is a deeply emotive masterpiece and will be played by the exceptional violin soloist Andy Long.

The evening concludes with Ashkenazy’s masterful arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Audiences will be invited to step inside Mussorgsky’s vibrant gallery, exploring a world of imagery and character brought vividly to life by the many brilliant orchestral colours.

Musical Director Shaun Matthew shares his excitement about the upcoming programme:
“This concert is a real celebration of Russian music at its most passionate, powerful, and colourful. From Glazunov’s sweeping landscapes to Shostakovich’s raw intensity and Ashkenazy’s dazzling arrangement of Mussorgsky, we can’t wait to share this extraordinary journey with our audience.”
