Literature across Borders: Perspectives on the Partition of India

Online
Saturday 25th April 2026
Description

Starting at 6pm London-time, this ~90-minute Literature-across-Borders tie-in event will explore three books about Partition first published in India, the UK, and USA:
UK: Torn Apart: The Partition of India by Swapna Haddow
India: Across the Line by Nayanika Mahtani
US: The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani

We are delighted to be joined by the three authors for a chaired dialogue on writing and being published in three very different socio-political and socio-cultural contexts. How do these factors shape approaches to telling stories about these historic events? How have these books travelled across borders? How have the authors approached writing historical fiction in terms of craft, research and engaging with the business of being published?

The event will be chaired by Meghaa Gupta, and organised by Dr Alexia Casale, co-founders of Literature across Borders.

This event is hosted by Bath Spa University, UK, in collaboration with Literature across Borders. You can read about LaB, and watch videos of past events here: https://www.bathspa.ac.uk/projects/literature-across-borders/

The event will be in English and is planned to be delivered via Microsoft Teams. Closed captions are user-enabled on Teams: availability will depend on the user's joining platform.

This is a free event, but tickets are necessary as spaces are limited. We will send the joining link (and any updates to the planned programmed) the day before the event via the email address provided.

Please note timings (and speakers) may be subject to some variation on the day.
