BEINN BHREAC (MUNRO) FROM VICTORIA BRIDGE
STRONG WALK
Depart from Green Hut Ballater at 8:30am by minibus - Please arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
Approximate Distance 23km
Approximate Ascent 700m
Approximate Walking Time (including breaks) 7-8 hours
Landranger Map no. 43
The walk begins at Victoria Bridge, beside the impressive Mar Lodge, in the beautiful Cairngorms National Park. Crossing into the Mar Lodge Estate, the route heads into the hills on estate tracks through woodland and along the glen, offering lovely views of the River Dee and the surrounding mountains.
We will follow the track through Glen Lui towards Derry Lodge, the old estate lodge set among the Scots pines. Beyond Derry Lodge, we continue northwards into Glen Derry, following the track alongside the Derry Burn. The landscape gradually becomes wilder as the woodland thins and the glen opens out, with increasingly impressive views of the surrounding Cairngorms.
Leaving the track, the route climbs the open hillside towards Beinn Bhreac (931 m). The ascent crosses rough, often boggy upland ground, with a steeper climb towards the broad summit area. From the top, there are extensive views across the remote mountain landscape, including the neighbouring Cairngorm giants and the great expanses of moorland and glen below.
After the summit, we will descend from Beinn Bhreac and return to Derry Lodge before following the Lui Water to our pick up point. The walk finishes at Linn of Dee car park, close to the spectacular river gorge where the Dee flows through a narrow channel of rock. It is a rewarding end to a walk through one of Scotland's finest areas of mountain scenery, combining historic estate buildings, ancient pinewoods, remote glens and a Munro summit.
TERRAIN – This is a challenging full-day mountain walk with significant ascent and descent, requiring both a good level of fitness and stamina. The majority of the walk is on good paths, a mixture of estate tracks and narrower woodland paths. The ascent and descent of Beinn Bhreac involves steep sections and open pathless hillside, with heather, peat, boggy patches and rocky ground underfoot. Walking poles are highly recommended and gaiters if the weather has been wet.
