YORK STORY BAR - ft. Tim Ralphs
The Cyclist York, York, YO10 4FS
Saturday 21st November 2026
Welcome to the first ever YORK STORY BAR, where all the stories go to hang out! The scene is The Cyclist cafe-bar at Cycle Heaven. But we'll be going to less angelic places....
Local storytellers and musicians Lara McClure and Adderstone (as well as a couple of surprises), will warm you up with some dark tales and songs to mark the nights closing in. Then charge your glass and settle in for our headline storyteller extraordinaire Tim Ralphs, with a show that's perfect for Viking-central York:
CAN THE MOUNTAINS LOVE THE SEA?
You are invited to a wedding at York Story Bar! There's a ruthless Giantess outside who wants to kill us all. Loki's going to do something disgusting with a goat. But it's all in aid of the most unlikely marriage the world will ever see - ruthless Skadi, daughter of murdered Thiazi, will wed Njord, the peaceful God of the Sea. You might think that this curious union is unlikely to lead to happiness ever after, but it would be rude to say anything, the bar is well stocked and, come bloodshed or bliss, we’ll be watching from ringside seats.
Can the Mountains Love the Sea? is Tim Ralphs' brand new adaptation of The Marriage of Njord and Skadi, a Norse myth brimful of anger, magic and adult humour. This is no happy-ever-after story, this is a tale that gets to the beating heart of an ancient myth and finds truths that ring through the ages.
“Words that are applied glibly to other performers – such as brave, experimental and innovative – apply truly to Tim Ralphs. An imagination and talent such as Ralph's spotlights storytelling as a thoroughly modern performance art form.”
Nell Phoenix, Story Nights Torriano
Tickets: £10 full price, £7 concession, £4 super-concession (e.g. students) + tiny booking fee
Timings: first half 45 minutes, second half 60-70 minutes.
FAQs:
*How do I reach the venue from central York?*
One mile walk along the river path, or take the number 7, 42 or 415 bus along Fulford Road to Aldi from York station, then walk down Hospital Fields Road.
*Is the venue accessible?*
It is fully wheelchair accessible.
*Which ticket should I buy?*
Please feel free to choose the ticket you can afford (£10, £7 or £4) based on your income and circumstances.
*Can I tell a story myself?*
We will include one or two novice/emerging storytellers in this event - do be in touch if you'd be interested to tell one yourself at a future York Story Bar!
*How often will York Story Bar take place?*
It's all to play for! We are envisaging an occasional storytelling club, perhaps several times a year depending on the level of local interest.
