O Brother, Where Art Thou?
USA 2000
Starring George Clooney, John Turturro
and Tim Blake Nelson
Director Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
Don't miss our annual outdoor screening in the beautiful garden of AFC member Marianne Mau.
This summer sees the release of The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's eagerly awaited movie based on the epic poem by Homer.
25 years ago the Coen brothers brought their own very different interpretation of this classic text to the screen in the form of a satirical, musical comedy set in the American South of the late 1930s. Three escaped convicts searching for buried treasure, that is about to be submerged in a flooded valley, are pursued by a vengeful sheriff across country. Can Ulysses McGill (Clooney) and his sidekicks Pete and Delmar find the loot and run the gauntlet of perils including an evil one-eyed bible salesman, sirens washing clothes in a river and the Ku Klux Klan.
There are great comedic turns from George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson with support from Coen Bros regular John Goodman and Holly Hunter as Ulysses' wife Penny. Ace cinematographer Roger Deakins shoots the action in sepia-tinted tones that transport us back in time.
The film is blessed with a fabulous soundtrack of folk and bluegrass music featuring the voices of Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss. The convicts band The Soggybottom Boys perform a dynamite version of 'man of Constant Sorrow' The music prompted a smash-hit concert tour, a Grammy winning album and a wonderful documentary - 'Down From the Mountain' which makes a wonderful accompaniment to the movie.
