9 to 5
USA 1980
Starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin
Director Colin Higgins
One of the great talents of American popular music died in August. Born into poverty in rural Tennessee Dolly Parton was one of 12 children in a family that lived in a one room cabin until her abilities as a singer/songwriter catapulted her to fame and fortune in Country music and beyond. Among her hits is the best-selling single by a female artist - 'I Will Always Love You' as well as iconic ballads like 'Jolene' and 'The Coat of Many Colours'. She was also a brilliant businesswoman and a generous philanthropist whose funding benefited literacy campaigns, medical research and disaster relief.
Parton had been a TV regular from 10 years old but her film career began with 9 to 5 - a sparky satirical comedy that teamed her with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin playing the beleaguered female employees in a corporation riddled with unfairness, misogyny and corruption. Dolly plays Doralee - secretary to the company vice president who along with newcomer Judy (played by Jane Fonda) plots revenge on her rotter of a boss. When their scheme misfires the fun begins.
A sharp script by Patricia Resnick and a catchy theme song, penned of course by Parton herself, add up to a laugh out loud treat.
